In a world where social media and TV are the main source of entertainment, and they are not far fetched, we lean towards entertainment and the moment we don’t get to entertain ourselves as much, we fall into boredom easily.
We all have those moments where we don’t have anything to do, idle and bored out of our minds. Boredoms is not such a pleasurable concept, it is seemed as torture. But however, it does not necessarily have to be torture, and being bored might actually be a tool for creative minds. Being bored in its actual definition is when you don’t have anything to do, literally no activity, and you’re just there, probably deep in your own thoughts.
However, as a creative, boredom might actually be the force that drives your creative mind into creating a phenomenal thing.
Imagine being alone in a room, no phones and nobody around, the next thing you do is fall into boredom, that should not be the case, you can try your hands on new things, even go outside of your own niche and be an inquisitive mind, learn how some things around you work, and that way you can only focus on the thing you are trying to create or modify.
Instances Where Boredom Enhances Creativity
- When you are bored, it gives you the need to get answers, to want more out of life, you feel the need to get out of that idleness, and you start looking around for clues, and that’s when you get it, it just works out, you just thought of something phenomenal, imagine an artist, staring at a tree outside, with clear mind, and being able to think straight without any obstruction from chores or projects to work on, can get inspiration for their next project from there and that’s how so many great art projects were born, through boredom.
- Imagine an aspiring engineer, bored at home, with nothing to do, can easily focus on thinking about the next innovation, with the little knowledge they have about engineering and the ability to be creative can go into the garage, pick up a bunch of scraps and motor parts, and create something cool. Like a miniature car model, which he can sell to big car brands amongst other innovations too.
- A graphic designer, struggling from creative block, and after falling into boredom, suddenly have time to think of different logo ideas for his new project, they cannot focus on thinking alone when on their phones or having fun elsewhere, unless they see a particular item that gives them inspiration, and even at that, they have to be alone, and idle to be able to process that inspiration and create something beautiful out of it
Boredom does not have to be an avenue to be idle, when we look at the bright side, it is supposed to ignite the creativity in you. Being idle equals being focused on one thing at a time, and that’s the best way to be creative.
