In a world where technology seems to be evolving at the speed of light, Artificial intelligence (AI) is only one of many technological advancements of the century. AI has changed how we approach life and it definitely has come to stay. From being your own personal assistant, a source of knowledge that’s at the tip of your fingertips, to helping put shape to an idea we have in our head. Some argue the outputs AI gives might not be matched by outputs by the human mind.
One such output is in the graphics design space. These days, with a combination of the right prompts/key words ,an AI tailored to your needs as well as source material, you can have an automated generated image within minutes whereas, it takes the human mind hours at least to put together such an output.
However, some argue that AI generated images lack details and that AI platforms seek to fill these details with whatever it can find.
Graphics designed images on the other hand are much more hands on experience type situations where one has complete and absolute control as regards what the final output looks like. These generated images also tend to contain more details compared to AI images.
With AI constantly evolving, it is optimistic at best to hope that one day, in the nearest future, AI generated images might become a suitable substitute for graphics designed images but for now, you’re safer putting your eggs in the basket labelled “graphics designed images” over AI generated images
Look at these features to help you understand how they both serve and how they help in different areas
Quality
AI generated images follow certain programming based on the existing data to generate images which may look robotic in a way. Certain AI tools are incapable of generating images outside of their programmes which can be quite annoying but Graphic designed images doesn’t have that problem as you can choose whichever design, manipulate any other way you would want your design. Humans can design, talk, collaborate and make changes based on vision which would improve quality and AI isn’t capable of that.
Speed
In this particular area, I feel AI wins, the speed at which AI can generate images cannot be replicated by anyone ever no matter how skilled or professional you might be or hoping to be. However, it speaks to the quality of the image. But at the end of the day, it boils down to preference. Fast and not quite original or slow and original.
Consistency
While AI can be fast, it can’t be as consistent as Human or graphic designed images. AI is bound to make mistakes and make errors in certain ways which make it hard for it to be consistent and keep to a certain standard when it comes to images. Although, it’s still evolving and maybe it will improve to that level but for now, human generated images still have it beat in that category.
Cost
This is quite tricky, which still boils down to preference. AI tools cost less compared to humans. AI would charge you monthly or would require a one off payment while humans will charge per design based on their skill set, expertise, etc. If you are the type that would consider cost over quality or originality, you might want to opt for AI.
Ownership
Before an AI generated image would be relinquished to the consumer, it would require extra cost and sometimes impossible as some AI tools do not give that feature. This is not the case for graphic designed images, you get your image without any hidden charges and you own the image as soon as it is done being designed.
As someone who makes use of AI tools to generate images and also design images on a daily basis. I can say these two serve their own purpose for different needs. If you want a strong, visualized image that tells what you have in mind, graphic designed images are the right way to go and if you are the type that wants just any design fast and quick, then you have several AI tools at your disposal.
Personally, I make use of both based on my mood and what I need at that particular moment. I can easily generate an AI image to give me a creative approach on how to design an image. They both serve my purpose.
