First… Story time. My name is Seyi, I am an over confident social media manager who feels he can do it all. I take on more than I should, I find ways to better myself everyday. This is actually killing but how do I excel? People will mock me if I’m not up to par, I’ll lose jobs if I’m not vast enough and so maybe, become poor along the line. That’s definitely not a life that I want for myself.
Anyway, fast forward to last September. I had taken on more than I could bear, I got a gig that involved social media management, paid ads inclusive (bear in mind I’m new to running ads).
I started on the gig and it was going smoothly until I hit a wall – couldn’t run the paid ads. It was a task that I hadn’t done before and my over confidence wouldn’t let me ask for help. So, I began impromptu research work and unfortunately, this got out of hand and the account access got blocked – moment of regret. Why did I take the gig? Why did I not ask for help? Why was I too greedy? I could have avoided all these errors, asked for help and still kept this job.
Don’t be like Seyi. Follow these steps to avoid errors at work
1. Avoid being over confident and arrogant
Arrogance they say is the beginning of downfall. To excel in all areas of life, try and ask for help when necessary. When in doubt ask for help, when you’re confused, ask for help. This will most definitely help to avoid errors and mitigate problems.
2. Be organized
Organization will allow you to focus on one task at a time, if you need to assign tasks, this will allow you to have easy access to all the channels to your tasks. You can make use of tools such as Trello, Asana, etc to make this easier.
3. Always double check and verify
Before submitting or turning over any task, be sure to double check all necessary details so as to avoid errors.
4. Communication
This is very effective when trying to avoid errors. Whether it is with the client or people that you have work assigned to, make sure you get and give correct directions.
5. Don’t stop learning
The best way to avoid errors is through continuous learning. You learn from people, you learn from the internet, school, etc. Never stop learning.
